چکیده

I N a country where smallpox is common, one would expect an association of smallpox with pregnancy to be a common occurrence. But a careful study of the available literature shows that not many such cases have been reported. When smallpox affects a pregnant woman, it tends to become very malignant. The sudden onset of signs and symptoms and the short duration of the disease and the rapid termination make the diagnosis extremely difficult. The interesting clinical features and unusual and unique pathological findings together with the difficulties we had in the diagnosis make it justifiable to publish such a case.

Antibody response in non-haemorrhagic smallpox patients.

Various studies have been made on the antibody response in smallpox. In some of these haemagglutinin inhibition tests (HI) have been used for measurement of antibody (Collier & Schonfeld, 1950) in others, complement-fixation tests (CFT), precipitation tests (pt.) and HI tests (Herrlich, Mayr & Mahnel, 1959) or CF, HI and neutralization tests (Downie & McCarthy, 1958). In the present study, all ...

Smallpox during Pregnancy and Maternal Outcomes

A historical study evaluated maternal outcomes in pregnancy complicated by smallpox. The overall case fatality was estimated to be 34.3% (95% confidence interval [CI] 31.4-37.1), and the proportion of miscarriage or premature birth was estimated to be 39.9% (95% CI 36.5-43.2). Vaccination before pregnancy reduced the risk for death.
